FSIN calls for priority access to COVID-19 vaccine

The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) is urging the federal government to provide priority access to a COVID-19 vaccine to First Nation communities working to protect vulnerable members.

It comes as the federal government signed deals with two suppliers, Johnson and Johnson and Novavax, on Monday to try and ensure access to a vaccine when it’s available.

Earlier this month Ottawa signed similar deals with Pfizer and Moderna.

In a media release Tuesday, the FSIN cites the Medicine Chest Clause in Treaty 6 for getting priority access.

“We are implementing our Inherent and Treaty Right for protection from pestilence and famine,” FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron said in the release.

“Our First Nations require vaccines as soon as they are available. The Federal Government must ensure they have priority delivery because our First Nations communities are the most vulnerable.”

The FSIN represents 74 First Nations in Saskatchewan.
