The past few days have been a most excellent adventure for a couple of members of the Saskatoon band Bombargo after they found out Friday a video they produced made it into the latest Bill and Ted movie — Bill and Ted Face the Music.
Anthony Thoen and Spencer Chilliak are both huge fans of the Bill and Ted movies, so when a contest came open to make a video that could appear in the latest movie, they decided to do a Hail Mary.
Thoen says the movie was supposed to be released earlier this year but was delayed because of COVID-19.
“I think Bill and Ted were like, ‘Let’s get the world involved and the community involved,’ so the Wild Stallions (band) put out this demo and put a call out on the website ‘Party on with Bill and Ted’ for friends, family, pets — you name it — to video yourself jamming out to the song,” said Thoen.
Thoen says they asked themselves: “What would Bill and Ted do if they were trying to get in their own music video as their younger selves?”
“So that’s why we went bombing down a hill on skateboards while playing guitar to their song because we figured that was a Bill and Ted-esque move,” said Thoen.
Chilliak says the video shoot involved three of them on skateboards, with him and Thoen playing guitar and Thoen’s brother Quentin doing the taping.
“Yeah, he was rolling down in front of us, looking backwards filming us on the skateboard and to be honest we were lucky to get out of that shoot alive,” Anthony Thoen said. “There were a lot of factors involved that could have been sheer death.
“That said, had we run into Death himself, that would have been pretty bodacious as an experience in its own right.”
Thoen says the band hasn’t been together for quite a while because the lead singer had been stranded in Bali and only recently got home. He says he will be out of quarantine soon, so they plan to take in the movie to see their cameo Wednesday night.
“From what we’ve heard from people who’ve seen it, it’s right at the beginning of the credits, right before the credits start,” said Thoen.
Both men say anyone who is interested in coming to watch their cameo in the movie is more than welcome to join them.
