Two Regina men threw their hats into the ring Friday for the Nov. 9 municipal election.
Jim Elliott announced he will be running for mayor, while Mark Shmelinski said he will seeking election as a city councillor in Ward 10.
Elliott, who’s known for his environmental activism in the city, previously ran for mayor in the 2009, 2012 and 2016 elections.
In a media release, Elliott said his 2020 platform is built on four pillars: Protecting the planet, not leaving people behind, respecting Indigenous people in the community, and taking care of the city’s youth.
Coun. Jerry Flegel and Tony Fiacco already have announced their intentions to run for mayor. Incumbent Michael Fougere has yet to make his candidacy official, but he has said he will be running.
Shmelinski, who owns The Everyday Kitchen in Regina, is seeking to replace Flegel in Ward 10.
“I’m very happy to announce that, after many years of consideration, I will be putting my name forward to run as the city councillor for Ward 10,” Shmelinski said in a media release.
“In a critical time in our city’s history, this is an important and exciting day for me, and I’m happy to have the support of my family and friends as I jump into the race.”
EDITOR’S NOTE: This is an amended version of this story, correcting the years in which Elliott previously ran for mayor.
