The City of Regina’s CartSmart team is set to expand its efforts this fall.
In a media release Tuesday, the city said crews will be out again this fall to check on recycling carts to make sure people have put the proper items in the bins.
The initiative was a pilot project in 2019. According to the city, 2,657 carts were checked over a six-week period last year.
Once again, residents who have placed in their blue carts unacceptable items or material that hasn’t been prepared properly will find “Oops” tags with helpful tips affixed to their carts. Residents who have recycled properly will get a “Good job” sticker.
The city says 10 per cent of the items put in the carts can’t be recycled through the city’s program.
This year, the team also will be putting tags on brown garbage and blue recycling carts when items are placed outside the bins on streets or in alleys, or when the carts aren’t pulled onto the owner’s property within 24 hours of being emptied.
The goal of the service is to lower the number of overfilled carts, decrease the amount of unacceptable material in the recycling carts, encourage proper recycling habits and encourage residents to keep Regina clean.
