Regina snow plows hit the streets

Regina got around three inches of fresh snow and snow plows were hitting the streets early Friday morning.
The trucks began by cycling through category one and two roads, especially high-speed roads like Lewvan Drive and Ring Road.
Pat Wilson with the city said they wait until the snow has stopped before moving on from the high-traffic roads.
“Otherwise we’re having to go over the same streets again and it winds up wasting time,” he said.
The city said they have specific timelines to get streets done and were expected to begin a systematic plow Friday afternoon or early evening.
According to the City of Regina, the different categories are:

Category 1: roads are plowed within 24 hours after a major snow event and a minimum of 5 cm of snow. They include major arterials and hospital routes such as Albert Street, Broad Street, Victoria Avenue, Lewvan Drive and Ring Road.
Category 2: roads are plowed within 36 hours after a major snow event and a minimum of 5 cm of snow. They include minor arterials and high volume collections such as Elphinstone Street, Broadway Avenue and Regina Avenue.
Category 3: roads are plowed within 48 hours after a major snow event and a minimum of 10 cm of snow. These include low volume major collectors, industrial/commercial and Regina Transit routes not covered in Category 1 or 2.
Category 4: roads are plowed within 60 hours after a major snow even and a minimum of 10 cm of snow. These include minor collectors and the streets around school zones like Wakefield Crescent and Fairview Road.
Category 5: roads are plowed after 25 cm of snow in a single major snow event, or when ruts exceed 10 cm in depth. These are residential streets and are completed as weather and time permits.

The City of Regina will be posting real-time snow and ice-clearing plans to electronic billboards throughout the city.
