A 20-year-old Regina man is now facing a charge of manslaughter in connection with the death of a one-year-old girl in the city.
Bailey Carter Lance Peepeetch initially was charged with aggravated assault, but the charge was upgraded after the toddler died in hospital.
It’s the 11th murder in Regina in 2020.
Peepeetch made his first court appearance on the new charge Tuesday.
In their initial media release about the incident, police said officers responded Oct. 7 just before 5:30 p.m., to a Regina hospital after getting a call that paramedics were en route with an injured child.
Paramedics told police they suspected the injuries were the result of physical abuse. Peepeetch was arrested after investigators determined there was enough evidence against him to lay a charge of aggravated assault.
On Oct. 9, police were notified the girl had died. Discussions between investigators, the Crown, the Regina Children’s Justice Centre and the Saskatchewan Coroners Service resulted in the charge against Peepeetch being amended.
He was rearrested Monday and charged with manslaughter.
Peepeetch isn’t related to the girl, but they lived in the same house.
