Potash mines in the province are starting to ramp up in 2017.
The Mosaic mine in Colonsay, located around 77 kilometres southeast of Saskatoon, called back 330 workers on Dec. 5, 2016.
Those employees were laid off in July due to low potash prices and low demand for the product.
“Workers have been doing a lot of maintenance work to get ready,” said Mosaic spokeswoman Sarah Fedorchuk.
“We think there is some reconciliation with supply and demand. Growth is certainly there now.”
Production at the facility is expected to begin again in mid January.
Potash prices have fallen over the last eight years, to US $215 per tonne from a peak of almost US $900 per tonne in 2008 – which was the highest ever.
“We are cautiously optimistic 2017 will be a stronger year for the potash industry,” Fedorchuk said.
