A 27-year-old man who allegedly shot at a Regina Police Service officer during an investigation a week ago is now in custody.
In a media release Friday, Regina police say they got a call from the RCMP on Oct. 23 about a robbery that had occurred east of the city. The suspect reportedly had a gun and had stolen a vehicle.
Officers subsequently saw the vehicle in the Al Ritchie neighbourhood at around 9 p.m., at which time the suspect allegedly fired a gun at an officer in an unmarked police vehicle while both vehicles were moving.
The officer wasn’t injured.
Officers eventually laid down a spike belt to stop the vehicle, which finally came to a halt near the intersection of Broad Street and Victoria Avenue.
Officers tried to remove the man from the vehicle and, during the struggle, an officer used a Taser on the suspect. It wasn’t effective, but officers managed to subdue the man. He was arrested on outstanding warrants.
The man was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries he suffered during the arrest. Police said he spent much of the week in hospital “for a health matter unrelated to his contact with police.”
He has been remanded into custody and police anticipate he’ll face more charges.
Anyone who has information that could help police in their investigation is asked to call them at 306-777-6500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
