Vancouver is pondering another Olympic bid for the 2030 Winter Games.
I’m all for cities reapplying as hosts before their infrastructure ends up needing renovations from their first go-round.
The Olympic funding model forces countries and cities to invest billions into having adequate facilities for one shot at hosting the world.
Well, the model needs a major fix and it’s returning to cities to host the Olympics like Vancouver that put in the investment. But the investment and the bidding process shouldn’t be for one year.
Fewer cities are bidding because the price tag is too high.
So, make it more affordable.
For those making the investment, a promise of two or three Olympics in a 30-year span would be a much easier sell.
You see the International Olympic Committee returning to Beijing, in 2022, though this will be the Winter Games instead of the Summer Games that were there in 2008.
And after the success of 2010, why wouldn’t the IOC want to return to Vancouver and Whistler? It would seem like a no-brainer.
