A group of Saskatchewan miners are smiling big this week after winning the lottery.
Mike Pulak with the United Steelworkers Union told 650 CKOM that 20 employees from the Cory mine, west of Saskatoon, won $1 million playing the Lotto Max.
The miners each took home $50,000 after winning one of the Maxmillions prizes.
Pulak said it’s a good news story on two fronts as one winner elected for early retirement – saving a job that was slated to be cut at the mine.
“He was fortunate to be one of those lucky lotto winners, so it was good karma that he would do something good,” he said.
“A junior person on the list – ‘on the bubble’ they call it – he (is) back to a permanent position instead of being laid off.”
Potash Corporation issued 140 layoff notices last November. Pulak said due to early retirements, some of those positions will be saved.
The Cory mine is located around 18 kilometres west of Saskatoon.
Another Saskatchewan resident is $500,000 richer after they split a Maxmillions prize with someone in B.C.
A ticket purchased in Quebec won the $60-million jackpot.
