Friday will be a day in Rider history that will mark a turn in the franchise.
Because Darian Durant was the franchise.
It’s now the fear of the unknown. Saskatchewan has always known who their quarterback was for the opening game of the season for the last eight years. It’s Darian Durant. After he clinched the spot in 2009, there has never been any question who the coach was going to tap for the number one job in June.
The phrase “the fans favourite quarterback is the backup” went away in Saskatchewan for the first time since Ron Lancaster. It was rare to find anybody really believe there was someone better.
Every starter has their detractors but all of a sudden one of those turned into his Head Coach. From “moderately successful” to “numbers don’t lie,” Chris Jones was convinced Darian Durant has turned into a slightly above average quarterback.
But from January 13, 2017 forward, it’s a new chapter of Roughrider football.
It’s the Chris Jones era, no doubt about that. The only thing we doubt is how long this chapter will be.
