For the first time since 1985, there won’t be a New Year’s Day celebration at Government House in Regina.
Lt.-Gov. Russ Mirasty announced Tuesday the 2021 celebration won’t be held due to COVID-19.
“To help slow the spread of COVID-19 and to support public health guidelines, we’ve decided to postpone our New Year’s Day celebration,” Mirasty said in a media release. “We will monitor the evolving situation and consider hosting a safe event at a later date.”
According to the release, the event was first held in 1884 and was staged annually until the early 1970s. It was brought back in 1985 and held every year until this year’s cancellation.
The New Year’s Day event may have been cancelled, but Government House has been decorated for the season. More information about virtual tours is available at www.governmenthousesk.ca.
