Jamie Nye: Character doesn't mean wins, but both are nice

The reaction to Duron Carter becoming a Saskatchewan Roughrider is mixed.

Some aren’t happy with the decision based on his on and off field problems in Montreal.

Others couldn’t care less about that, they are just happy the Riders have found a big, dynamic receiver who can catch the ball and help them win.

What I take issue with are the fans who believe somehow, in someway, Saskatchewan is different than everywhere else.

That this team should care about character more than others because it’s community owned and the players are more in the bubble.

Nope.

Not true.

Every team should be equally concerned about players’ character.

That’s why Montreal got rid of Carter and Kenny Stafford or the Argonauts with Tori Gurley and that group. Those players were locker room problems and the coaches and managers thought it best they get cut out.

That’s where the concern lies. Chris Jones talks about wanting character guys, but his definition must be different than ours.

But when push comes to shove, football is a wins business more than a character business.

But it’s better when you have both.

And that’s the case whether you’re in Winnipeg, Ottawa or Saskatchewan.
