The Western Hockey League has committed to dropping the puck on the 2020-21 season, but a start date has yet to be determined.
Each team’s season will consist of 24 games.
The league announced its board of governors held a meeting Friday, which was to be the start date for a WHL season before it was postponed. The league has been trying to determine the best course of action to return to play during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The start date for the season still has to be set once final approval has been received from provincial and state health authorities. The WHL anticipates approval will be given soon.
“The Western Hockey League is committed to providing a season for WHL players,” WHL commissioner Ron Robison said in a news release. “This commitment ensures WHL players will receive the opportunity to compete at the highest level in the system and continue to pursue their hockey goals in the world’s finest development league for junior hockey players.”
The league says all models and schedule formats are being considered.
