For the second straight day, Saskatchewan set a new single-day high in total hospitalizations due to COVID-19.
In a media release Thursday, the Ministry of Health reported there were 206 people in Saskatchewan hospitals — up one from the previous high, which was set Wednesday.
The province said there weren’t any deaths to report, leaving the provincial total to date at 206.
There were 312 new cases reported, increasing Saskatchewan’s total since March to 19,329 cases. The seven-day average of new cases in the province is 313.
The new cases announced Thursday were in the Saskatoon (99), Regina (51), north-central (39), far northeast (29), southeast (24), northwest (18), far northwest (14), far north-central (eight), northeast (seven), central-east (seven), south-central (seven), central-west (two) and southwest (one) areas. The hometowns of six new cases are pending.
There were 201 recoveries announced, increasing that total so far to 15,264.
The number of active cases being reported in the province was 3,859.
As of Wednesday, Saskatchewan’s rate of active cases was 319 per 100,000 population — the highest-such mark in Canada. Alberta was second at 294, with Quebec third at 279.
Of the people in hospital in the province, 33 are in intensive care, with 15 in Saskatoon, 10 in Regina, five in the north-central region, two in the northwest and one in the central-east area.
The 173 people receiving inpatient care are spread between the Saskatoon (47), Regina (42), north-central (34), northwest (13), northeast (13), southeast (10), central-east (eight), far north-central (two), far northwest (one), far northeast (one), central-west (one) and south-central (one) regions.
The total number of cases in the province includes 960 health-care workers.
To date, there have been 6,997 cases in the 20-to-39 age range, 4,884 between the ages of 40 and 59, 4,087 among people 19 and under, 2,469 from age 60 to 79 and 884 in the 80-and-over age range. The ages of eight cases are unknown.
The Saskatoon area has reported 5,144 cases to date, followed by the north (4,991), the Regina region (3,614), the far north (2,450), the south zone (1,931) and the central area (1,107). The hometowns of 92 cases are being determined.
The 3,270 tests processed in Saskatchewan on Wednesday increased the province’s total to date to 461,935.
As of Thursday, 11,985 doses of COVID-19 vaccine had been given in the province.
That included 1,393 doses that were administered Wednesday in the Regina (393), Saskatoon (435), north-central (295), far northwest (121), far north-central (11), far northeast (30) and northeast (108) zones.
On January 12, 664 vaccinations were done in the Regina (90), Saskatoon (174), north-central (139), far northwest (130), far north-central (20), far northeast (11) and northeast (100) regions.
Health officials have started vaccinating seniors aged 70 and over in some communities in the province. Those clinics are by appointment only.
