Man's body found on Regina road after hit and run

Regina police are investigating after a body was found on Ross Avenue east near Elliot Street.
 
Just before 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, an officer tweeted out that the eastbound lanes on Ross Avenue between Winnipeg Street and McDonald would be closed due to a vehicle-pedestrian collision.

Early Monday morning, police confirmed that a call came in around 7:33 p.m. for a report of a 42-year-old  unconscious man who had appeared to been hit by an unknown vehicle. Officers found the man dead at the scene.

“They also discovered in addition to the deceased victim, a bicycle at the scene, and so we believe this is a cyclists who was struck by a vehicle who had left the scene,” said Elizabeth Popowich, spokeswoman for the Regina police.

Police are not releasing the identity of the man until his family has been notified. 

A person in the neighbourhood, who wished to remain anonymous, told 980 CJME she heard a loud bang and originally thought someone was breaking into her house.
 
“I checked out my front window, and I didn’t see anything until a little bit later when red and blue lights were flashing,” she said.
 
She said it didn’t take long for police to come and once they showed up and shined their lights she couldn’t believe what she saw.
 
“All you saw was blood,” she said.
 
Evan Wilson also lives nearby and said it’s not unusual to hear sirens come and go as the street can be busy. He added this time was different as the sirens stayed in the area.
 
Wilson said although the speed limit is 70 kilometres per hour, he’s seen people speed through way too much.
 
“People drive 90 km/h or even 100 km/h,” said Wilson. “Especially on the weekends, because there’s not a lot of traffic on (Ross Ave), but you’re lucky if they were doing 70 km/h but that’s just the way it is on here on weekends.”
 
He added that while he was walking over to see what was going on, he noticed a mangled bike with police evidence markers around it.

“That’s a long way for a bike to travel, like the bike is almost down at the corner of McDonald,” Wilson said. “So you gotta think that’s about two blocks away, so I think he got hit hard.”
