TSN’s Darren Dreger was the first to report that NHL regular season games are likely to take place in Sweden next season. The Avalanche and Senators will play two games there, pending player association approval.
This may not be ideal for the teams, but it is a good thing for the National Hockey League. The NHL is the best professional hockey league on Earth. While we in Canada would like to think we dominate the game, players from around the world have gotten better. Players from overseas have played a role in the entertainment we enjoy, so I see this as a way to pay those across the water back.
I also endorse the NHL’s appetite to strengthen its brand overseas. The NHL and its players may find new revenue streams and find new fans by playing some games outside North America. Why not take the world’s best professional hockey league to the world?
