“If they feel we’re doing such a bad job and we’re not educated enough to do our jobs, then I would’ve loved for someone to come out and actually physically sit with us and educate us then,” Mia Danakas Weinkauf said Friday.
Instead, Weinkauf claimed inspectors issued a $14,000 ticket without warning for a violation on Jan. 23.
“No warning, no nothing. (They) didn’t even tell the management or the servers that they had done anything wrong,” Weinkauf told 980 CJME on Thursday.
Weinkauf claimed one of the inspectors told her she couldn’t seat people in back-to-back booths, even though the booths are separated by wooden partitions, thinking she was following the rules.
“We were told that if we had partitions, we were able to sit people at the booth, that they didn’t have to be social distanced because we paid a lot of money, like all the other businesses in Regina to survive, to install professional partitions,” said Weinkauf.
980 CJME has obtained a copy of the ticket which describes the offence as “Multiple tables… booths seated patrons who were inadequately separated by physical distancing.”
980 CJME also reached out to the SHA to ask for an explanation of the specific violation in this case and if it tries to work with businesses to help them comply with the public health measures. The SHA also was asked if it had any record of prior warnings issued to Stats Cocktails & Dreams.
The SHA responded with a statement saying, “We understand there is a lot of interest in Public Health Order enforcement relating to COVID-19. We cannot release information specific to these tickets as the enforcement process is ongoing.”
Weinkauf plans to fight the ticket because paying the hefty fine would mean the bar would have to shut down. She added the threats she has received over social media have caused turmoil for her family.
“People (are) saying that they hope my family dies of COVID (and) that I should be shut down forever after a business has been open for 40 years,” she said.
