The Saskatchewan government has announced the deaths of eight more residents due to COVID-19.
In a media release Wednesday, the Ministry of Health reported the deaths of three people in the 80-and-over age group (two who lived in the southeast and one who lived in the far northeast) and three people in their 70s (one in each of the central-east, northwest and far northeast zones).
Two individuals from the Regina region — one in their 40s and one in their 60s — also died.
To date, 322 residents of the province have died due to COVID.
The government also announced there were 185 people in hospital, the lowest that number has been since it was 177 on Jan. 22.
There were 26 people in intensive care, with 11 in the Saskatoon area, nine in the Regina zone, four in the central-east area and one in each of the northwest and north-central zones.
The 159 people receiving inpatient care included 58 in the Saskatoon area and 42 in the Regina region.
The ministry reported 194 new COVID cases, increasing the provincial total to date to 24,430.
The new cases reported Wednesday were in the Regina (62), Saskatoon (49), northwest (26), far northwest (11), north-central (10), northeast (eight), southeast (seven), far northeast (six), central-east (five), far north-central (two), central-west (one) and southwest (one) zones.
The hometowns of six cases are being investigated.
The seven-day average of new cases in Saskatchewan is 233, or 19.1 per 100,000 population.
There were 252 recoveries reported Wednesday, hiking that total so far to 21,854. The number of active cases fell to 2,254.
The 2,780 COVID tests processed in Saskatchewan on Tuesday increased the province’s total so far to 515,292.
Vaccination update
Shipments of the Pfizer vaccine have arrived in Saskatoon (975 doses) and Prince Albert (1,950 doses), with others destined for North Battleford (1,950 doses) and Yorkton (975) to arrive by the end of the day Wednesday.
A shipment of the Moderna vaccine is slated to arrive in the province before Saturday. During a media conference Tuesday, Premier Scott Moe said that shipment is to be given as second doses in the far north and northwest areas of the province and as first shots in Rosetown and Kindersley.
On Tuesday, 177 doses were administered — 156 in the Saskatoon zone, 11 in the central-east region and 10 in the far north-central zone. Further analysis determined an additional 11 doses were given in the central-east area on Monday.
The total number of shots given so far in the province stands at 35,763.
According to the government, getting extra doses from vials has resulted in 109 per cent of the doses received in Saskatchewan to date being administered.
