Some seniors in care homes throughout Regina received a very uplifting surprise on Thursday when a local florist donated over 40 arrangements of flowers.
Kirk Leier, owner of The Flower Shop on Hill Avenue, decided to donate an arrangement of flowers of equal or greater value for every arrangement that his business sold over a two day span.
For Leier, the response from people in and out of the community was shocking.
“We were very surprised about the reaction to this,” Leier said. “We’ve actually had a couple moments of tears, we’ve had a couple moments of great laughter with the nursing staff that have called us.
“It’s been very uplifting, we’ve been so thankful and grateful that we have gotten this support and that we have been able to help out others.”
The support for this idea was widespread, as people called in from out of the province after hearing about Leier’s plan from family and friends.
“We have had a couple purchases made from residents in Alberta, they called us, made a donation by donating their portion to a care home,” he said. “We followed up with that by matching their donation to another care home as well.
“We are really happy with how this turned out.”
Leier says that they delivered most of the flowers on Thursday, but have a few more arrangements they need to drop off this week.
In total, 45 arrangements were delivered to different care homes in the city.
Based on the reaction, Leier plans on doing this again soon.
“The community support has been so wonderful, we we are thinking this is going to be something we can do on a more regular basis moving forward,” he said.
