Recoveries once again outnumbered new COVID-19 cases in Saskatchewan on Wednesday.
In its daily update, the Ministry of Health said there were 180 recoveries and 121 new cases. The number of active cases in the province dropped to 1,431, with 431 in the Regina region and 264 in the Saskatoon area.
Two people from the 80-and-over age group — one each from the Regina and Saskatoon zones — died due to COVID. The death toll in the province to date is 389.
The new cases reported Wednesday were in the far northeast (40), Regina (35), Saskatoon (17), central-east (seven), northwest (six), north-central (six), northeast (three), far northwest (two), central-west (two) and southwest (one) zones.
The hometowns of two cases are being determined.
Of the latest cases, 53 were aged 19 and under, far and away the highest total among age groups. There were 29 cases among those aged 20 to 39, 21 in the 40-to-59 age group, 15 between the ages of 60 and 79, and two in the 80-and-over age group. The age of one case wasn’t known.
The seven-day average of new cases rose to 154, or 12.5 per 100,000 population.
The total number of cases in Saskatchewan to date is 29,059. There have been 27,239 recoveries reported.
There are 153 people in Saskatchewan hospitals, including 20 in intensive care. That group includes 10 people in the Saskatoon area, eight in the Regina region and one in each of the north-central and central-east zones.
The 2,588 COVID tests done Tuesday increased the province’s total to date to 582,829.
Vaccination update
Pfizer shipments of 3,510 doses each have arrived in Regina and Saskatoon. Shipments to North Battleford (2,340) and Prince Albert (4,680) are expected by the end of the day Wednesday.
The government said 50 per cent of priority health-care workers in Phase 1 of its vaccine distribution plan have received their first doses. That includes workers in long-term and personal care homes.
There were 1,358 shots given Tuesday, increasing the total in the province so far to 81,597.
The latest vaccinations were done in the north-central (452), Saskatoon (391), central-east (351), Regina (126), far north-central (21), far northeast (11) and northwest (six) zones.
