Regina’s Brandt Centre will see some big changes in time for the 2018 Memorial Cup.
The hockey arena will be getting at least 500 new seats for the tournament, set to take place in the Queen City from May 17-27, 2018.
“It will be a different-looking facility inside, but it’s a great thing for the community that these improvements are taking place,” said Anthony Marquart, co-owner of the Regina Pats.
Marquart explained the west concourse, where the section of seating on the concourse called “the penalty boxes”, will be replaced with seating and there’s a possibility of suites going up on the east side.
The Canadian Hockey League, Western Hockey League and the Regina Exhibition Association are working together to ensure the improvements are complete before the tournament.
Volunteers needed in 2018
The Memorial Cup is not the only major sporting event putting out a call for volunteers in 2018.
The Tim Hortons Brier will take place at Brandt Centre from Mar. 3-11.
Doug Leask, who actively volunteers in Regina, said he doesn’t think it will be hard finding people to donate their time.
“What will happen is people will be enthused to move from one event to the other,” he said.
Volunteer coordinator Bernadette McIntyre is also optimistic people will answer the call for volunteers.
“People want to be part of a successful large event,” McIntyre said. “They love to show the Regina and Saskatchewan hospitality.”
She mentioned volunteers will need to make sure they don’t burn themselves out, since the events take place just months apart.
