Evraz Place is now not the only place to get a COVID vaccine in Regina.
The University of Regina started serving as one of the mass vaccination clinics for Phase 2 of the government vaccine delivery strategy Monday.
In fact, many people in their 60s have already booked their vaccine appointments there.
In an email to the campus community, Dave Button, vice-president of administration, wrote: “The University is proud to be able to support the most important and ambitious public health initiative in recent history.”
The U of R-based clinic is located in Gym 2 on the east side of the kinesiology building. It will run until June, or beyond as required.
It will operate seven days a week from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., but will extend those hours depending on vaccine supply and staffing resources.
Lorraine Weber and Bob Nixon were two of the lucky ones who were set to get their vaccine Monday at the university.
“I’m very happy to be here and get it over with,” Nixon said.
“I’m excited about getting it,” Weber said.
Both of them arrived from out of town early in the morning because they weren’t sure what to expect.
“(The notification) said ‘U of R’ but that didn’t tell us where to go. We were here last week and there were no signs so I didn’t know so we came early. I had another appointment earlier and had that done,” Nixon said. “It brought us in here pretty good if you follow the signs.”
For those living on campus, and those within the WHL bubble, the email reassures that strict health and safety protocols will be in place, “including masking, sanitizing, physical distancing, limited numbers, designated entrances and exits, and one-way foot traffic.”
The clinic is operated by the Saskatchewan Health Authority with the university just providing space and facilities, including an ultra-cold freezer for vaccine storage donated by the Faculty of Science. That unit is in addition to four other freezers already provided by the U of R and First Nations University which have been deployed across the province.
As part of the government’s vaccine delivery strategy, Regina will have two mass immunization clinics along with potentially two drive-through clinics and one mobile clinic.
