The community of Eston is without a grocery store after it suffered heavy damage in Monday’s wind and snowstorm.
Gord Van Kannel, the operations manager at the Central Plains Co-op, said a piece of the building’s roof was torn off just before lunchtime.
“The wind was strong at that point, but it sounded like there may have been a wind gust that came through that caused that damage to occur,” Van Kannel said.
“We had a customer vehicle in our parking lot. As a result, that roof surface did end up landing on that vehicle.”
Thankfully the customer was inside the building when it occurred.
Van Kannel said staff are evaluating the cost of damage and hope to reopen later Tuesday once the building is deemed safe.
Eston is approximately 210 kilometres southwest of Saskatoon.
According to Environment Canada, Swift Current recorded the strongest wind gust in the province on Monday at 120 kilometres per hour.
Regina hit 93 km/h, while Saskatoon topped 85 km/h.
