A semi driver is dead after an eight-vehicle collision occurred on the Trans-Canada Highway during Monday’s snowstorm.
According to the RCMP, officers from the Morse detachment responded at about 2:15 p.m., to a report of a crash about four kilometres west of Chaplin in the westbound lanes of the highway.
Five semis, a large cube-style van, a truck and a passenger van were involved.
The Mounties say the passenger van and a semi collided, after which a second semi collided with the first. The other vehicles were subsequently involved.
The 22-year-old man from Calgary who was driving the second semi was pronounced dead at the scene. An occupant of one of the other semis was treated for what were described by the RCMP as minor injuries.
According to the RCMP, traffic will be diverted around the area for much of the day Tuesday as a collision reconstructionist completes an investigation.
