A medical health officer for the Saskatchewan Health Authority has some hope that public health measures are starting to work in Regina.
Dr. Maurice Hennink joined the Greg Morgan Morning Show on Thursday.
He called the COVID case numbers in Regina and surrounding areas “very concerning and high,” but added the daily new cases have stabilized over the last five to six days at around 100 per day.
“Whether that continues, we hope (it does), and (it’s) certainly on the downward trend,” said Hennink. “There were some spikes of 140 a day and we’ve not seen that in four or five days and so that’s maybe a hopeful sign.”
Hennink explained a decision to loosen restrictions in Regina would be based on a combination of factors. Those would include daily new cases, the test positivity rate, hospitalizations and outbreaks in the community.
He said the message to the public is to pay attention, be smart and be careful when out and about. He added avoiding a third wave in Saskatchewan depends on a number of factors including public health measures, vaccines, extensive testing and staying home if you have symptoms.
