Rush comeback for 6th straight win

Just when you count them out, the Saskatchewan Rush find a way.

Adam Jones was the overtime hero in a 12-11 overtime win against the Calgary Roughnecks, a sixth straight win for Saskatchewan.

After a pair of early first quarter goals, the Rush would not lead again until the fourth quarter.

Calgary came into the rivalry matchup with a game plan and was able to shut down the high-powered Saskatchewan offence for long stretches of the action.

“We weren’t very sharp and they ran us extremely hard,” said head coach Derek Keenan. “We just kinda hung around and we got some timely goals.”

For two teams with a rivalry dating back to the Rush’s time in Edmonton, both sides stayed disciplined with just 8 penalties split between them.

For the Rush, it was the first time at home in 2017 that the passes weren’t connecting, shots weren’t finding holes, and the visitors were capitalizing.

“I just don’t think we played well, to be honest,” said forward Adam Jones, who had the game-winner. “Every win is a win, sometimes they’re ugly but character wins like this builds morale.”

Jones’ Johnny on the spot moment brought the sold-out crowd of 15, 045 at SaskTel Centre to their feet. And it all came from what looked to be a broken play. On an errant pass from Jones, Rush captain Chris Corbeil stripped the Calgary player of the ball, Jones found himself all alone in front and the rest is history.

“In hindsight, I should have been heading back to our end but I had a feeling,” said Jones. “I didn’t go five-hole because it wasn’t working all night so decided to switch it up.

Robert Church and Ben McIntosh both had hat-tricks, most set up by leading scorer Mark Matthews, who had 6 assists and a goal to his name.

Aaron Bold made 34 saves in the win, including a big left shoulder stop with the game tied in the 4th quarter to force overtime.

With the win, the Rush win streak stands at six and the team is a perfect 4-0 at home.

They head on the road to face Vancouver on Saturday, March 4.
