Golf season is now in full swing, with courses providing a place for people to physically distance while enjoying a much-loved pastime.
Ray Wareham, the pro shop manager at The Lynbrook in Moose Jaw, is expecting a busy season.
“It’s the one thing people can get out and do right now, especially with the young kids and sports being shut down,” Wareham said during the Greg Morgan Morning Show.
Several people were already at the driving range at the Wascana Country Club on Friday morning, like Kelly Vall, who was safely enjoying the company of friends.
“Just love being outside and (being able to) socialize a little bit as long as you keep your distance,” Vall said.
“I like the challenge. You’re always playing against yourself. You can always improve a little bit.”
As for City of Regina golf courses, the Tor Hill opened Friday. The Murray and Joanne Goulet courses are to open April 16, with the Lakeview Par 3 to open on April 23, weather permitting.
Last year, courses opened in May after a lockdown was declared due to COVID-19. They opened with rules in place, like not having rakes and ball-washers on the course.
Once again, there will be restrictions, said Kevin Dietz from the Tor Hill.
“Basically everything on the golf course is the same as last year. Obviously we have some more restrictions inside the clubhouse with mandatory masking and our restaurant is not open for sit-down anymore. It’s just takeout,” Dietz said.
Back at the Wascana, Ryan Fischer was among the extra-cautious, wearing a mask on the driving range. He had been waiting a while to start playing again.
“I always miss being out here, this year particularly because we’ve been at home pretty much all year. So it was nice to get out,” he said.
“It’s not even about the golf so much. It’s more about the people and interacting and having a good time.”
Les Krentz is hoping for a lengthy season to work on his game.
“I’ll play for the next six months until snow flies again,” he said.
