Saskatchewan is making more people eligible for a COVID-19 vaccination.
In its daily media release, the Ministry of Health said all pregnant women will be able to book appointments by phone. That change also applies to 16- and 17-year-olds who are considered clinically extremely vulnerable as well as everyone over the age of 40 who lives in the far north.
As well, the appointment booking system is being expanded Wednesday as of 8 a.m., to accept anyone 52 and over.
The ministry also reported there were 288 new COVID cases, 280 recoveries and two more deaths, both in the Regina region.
A person in their 30s and an individual in their 60s are the latest Saskatchewan residents to die due to the virus. The death toll in the province now stands at 457.
There have been 3,813 cases of variants of concern identified in the province, an increase of 328 since Monday.
The largest increase was in the Saskatoon area, where 121 new variant cases were identified. The region’s total now stands at 302.
Vaccination expansion
Pregnant women and vulnerable 16- and 17-year-olds are to receive an eligibility letter from their doctors saying they can apply. Those individuals will have to call 1-833-727-5829 to book an appointment.
For people 52 and over, appointments can be made online or by phone.
A look at the numbers
The 288 new cases increase the provincial total to date to 36,892.
The latest new cases were reported in the Regina (117), Saskatoon (44), northwest (31), central-east (22), southwest (18), south-central (17), southeast (17), north-central (five), far northwest (four), northeast (three) and central-west (two) zones. The hometowns of eight cases are pending.
The seven-day average of daily new cases is 271, or 22.1 per 100,000 population.
The Regina region continues to have the most variant cases, at 2,505. That number grew by 82 from Monday.
The southeast (371), south-central (329) and central-east (111) areas also are reporting triple-digit totals of variants cases.
The recoveries announced Tuesday increased that total so far to 33,880. There are 2,555 active cases being reported in Saskatchewan.
There are 202 people in Saskatchewan hospitals due to COVID, including 41 in intensive care. There are 28 ICU cases in Regina, six in Saskatoon, two in each of the north-central, central-east and south-central zones and one in the southwest.
The 3,007 tests processed in the province Monday increased the total so far to 710,655.
Vaccination update
There were 7,846 doses of COVID-19 vaccine administered Monday in Saskatchewan, hiking the provincial total to 298,767.
The latest doses were given in the Regina (2,742), Saskatoon (1,632), southeast (1,051), central-east (589), central-west (339), south-central (331), southwest (324), north-central (311), northwest (137), northeast (78), far northwest (40), far northeast (40) and far north-central (one) zones.
There were 231 shots given to people whose residence is still being confirmed.
As of Monday, 53 per cent of Saskatchewan residents age 50 and over have received their first dose of vaccine.
