Here are the first instructions I remember giving my children: “When somebody says, ‘Don’t tell your parents,’ immediately tell your parents.”
I recalled that advice when hearing a minor hockey coach in Prince Albert used vulgar language and vague threats to his bantam-aged players. Bantam players are under 15 years old. The coach was most unhappy his dressing-room discussions were relayed to the team’s parents.
Such transgressions, he said, could hinder their future hockey careers.
He insisted the players should keep secret some things that happen in the dressing room.
Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! That’s what happened with the Swift Current Broncos when child predator Graham James was their coach.
Everything a minor sports coach does should be subject to public scrutiny. Full disclosure. Nothing to hide from anybody, especially the parents.
