Jamie Nye: Marc Trestman took a day to earn his team's trust

Marc Trestman got right down to business as head coach of the Toronto Argonauts, naming Ricky Ray his number one quarterback.

That had many giving a crooked glance that Trestman would give such a vote of confidence out of the gate to a quarterback that has been injured as often as Ricky Ray.

But Trestman is doing far more than naming a quarterback on Day One. He’s establishing trust as the leader of that locker room that he’ll be honest with his players. They are grown men after all.

No games, no agenda. All he said was Ricky Ray is the best quarterback right now on his roster, so he’s the number one guy.

Period.

Are you going to argue with him? Ricky Ray continues to be one of the most accurate passers in CFL history, despite his injury problems and if Trestman’s offence can keep Ray from getting hit. Ray can win. There is no doubt there. You can’t say the same for Drew Willy.

Trestman needed to be clear on the quarterback question on Day One and he was. A quarterback controversy is the last thing he needs as he jumps into a team with much bigger issues to address.
