Large retail spaces left vacant after Target closed its doors in 2015 are serving a new purpose for community groups in Saskatoon.
PCL Construction Management and Morguard Corporation are redeveloping the store’s former locations in Lawson Heights and Centre malls.
During demolition, PCL realized most of the material was in great shape and could be repurposed.
“(Workers) took a lot of extra time and care to make sure they are stacking this material in such a way that it can be reused without damage,” said PCL district manager Aaron Yohnke.
Yohnke said the construction company then extended an invite to groups in the city who might be able to benefit.
“We basically did walk-throughs with various folks in the community to see what they would be interested in taking and tried to make that happen wherever possible,” he said.
The Greater Saskatoon Catholic School Division needed ceiling tiles – so PCL provided them with 50,000 at no cost.
The school division said the donation allowed them to replace ceilings in 55 classrooms, saving the district around $50,000.
Habitat for Humanity also received materials from the vacant stores.
Yohnke said the partnership helps the environment by keeping material out of the landfill.
