Students in Regina’s schools will be learning from home for at least an additional week.
On Tuesday, Regina Public Schools and the Regina Catholic School Division both said they were extending temporary remote learning to May 3 at the earliest for all pre-kindergarten to Grade 12 students. The decision was made after consultations with Regina’s medical health officers.
The students previously were expected to return to schools next Monday, but COVID-19 cases and cases of variants of concern forced the divisions to move the return date.
The schools announced the move to online learning March 19, then decided April 1 to extend the return date to April 26.
“We would have preferred to have students return to their school desks to resume in-class learning,” Greg Enion, Regina Public School’s director of education, said in the release. “We have been informed that returning to schools now would not be the safest course and that it would not benefit our city’s effort to reduce our COVID-19 caseloads.
“Remote learning is not ideal, (but) we are confident that many of our students are continuing their learning. We are also working to keep parents informed with enough notice so they can make plans for their families.”
The public division said students and their families will continue to receive learning resources from teachers and their schools.
As well, the division said, “some school-based staff who are not directly involved in teaching students will continue to be tasked with identifying, reaching out and engaging with students who have been challenged by remote learning.”
The Catholic division said the COVID situation in Regina would determine whether it extends online learning further, but noted “we have other options to offer in-person learning in some format” if there is an extension.
“We remain committed to providing the best education during this pandemic,” the division said in a release. “We are committed to working with all our stakeholders to address any challenges resulting from this extension.”
