The City of Regina is aiming to begin the first phase of a crosstown bike route this year.
On Wednesday, the city revealed the projects that are to be part of a $2.2-million investment in cycling infrastructure in 2021.
One of those projects is an east-west bike route that will connect various central neighbourhoods in the city with the downtown via on-street bike lanes and pathways. The five-year project was identified as a priority by city planners in 2018.
In 2021, construction is to begin on the first of four phases.
This year, bike lanes are to be built on 13th Avenue between Forget Street and York Street, 14th Avenue between Edward Street and Montague Street, King Street between 15th Avenue and 14th Avenue, and McTavish Street between College Avenue and 14th Avenue.
The city also is planning to construct more multi-use pathways this year, including on Arcola Avenue between Pilot Butte Creek and University Park Drive, Albert Street between 23rd Avenue and Regina Avenue, Brinkworth Park from 13th Avenue and York Street to 14th Avenue and Edward Street, Pasqua Street between Parliament Avenue and Hill Avenue, and Hillsdale Street between 23rd Avenue and Broad Street.
More information about each project is to be released as construction begins.
The city is hoping to make its streets safer for cyclists, with council already voting to change the traffic bylaws for those who share the roads. Further details about bike lanes and multi-use pathways can be found here.
