A fire broke out just after noon Wednesday at the Canadian Tire store in Weyburn.
“Weyburn Fire responded to the report of a significant amount of tires on fire which were against the Canadian Tire building,” Fire Chief Simon Almond said.
The store was evacuated and most of the employees had to wait outside until it was safe for them to enter the building again.
“The fire is out right now and it is being investigated as we speak,” Almond said later in the day. “There was a significant gas leak that happened. The fire had impacted the gas line that ran right in that area. So obviously we had natural gas on fire too.
“One of the things we want to do when we have that type of fire is we don’t want to put the natural gas fire out. We want to terminate the supply of natural gas and let that put the fire out. So there was a little bit of a challenge in regards to that. We still wanted to put the tire fire out, however we needed to leave the natural gas burning.”
Almond said there weren’t any injuries to civilians, staff or emergency workers. He also said investigators are not expecting to find anything suspicious at this time.
