Let’s give credit where credit is due. The Western Hockey League, the Regina Pats, Evraz Place and the University of Regina gave some young men an opportunity to play.
After the WHL had its season and playoffs ripped away last year, the league did its all to get players back on the ice.
I remember Pats general manager John Paddock telling the Green Zone they owe it to the young men to do all they can to give them what was promised, which is a competitive environment and opportunity to advance their hockey careers.
So the league went to work and the hours of back and forth with the government and the partners to get the approval paid off.
Last night, the Prince Albert Raiders and Swift Current Broncos closed the hub and now the players head home, after being seen by the scouts and getting to do what so many other athletes have not.
Hopefully the graduating players are invited back when fans are allowed in next season and get the standing ovation they deserve for their years in the WHL.
But for now, here’s a virtual standing ovation to those who worked tirelessly to give them an opportunity to play their final games.
