A major construction project is to begin Thursday on Albert Street between Victoria Avenue and Saskatchewan Drive, and could affect traffic on one of Regina’s busiest streets until August.
According to the City of Regina, Albert is to be restricted to one lane in both directions for as much of the project as possible. The city hopes the work can be completed in early August, weather permitting.
The city said drivers may want to consider alternate routes during the construction. The project is to include replacing sidewalks, pedestrian ramps, curbs and gutters, and the road will be resurfaced.
As well, a new centre median will be installed between 11th and 12th avenues to reduce the risk of right-angle collisions that occur due to mid-block left turns.
“It is fantastic to see investments taking place in the heart of our city to improve sidewalks and drivability,” Mayor Sandra Masters said in a release.
“These improvements in Downtown are in preparation for upcoming events that will welcome people back to our hotels, restaurants, and shops in 2022 — such as the Saskatchewan Winter Games and Grey Cup.”
This year, the city is to invest $2.3 million in the Downtown, with projects including road and sidewalk work on Scarth and Lorne streets. Those streets also will have updated pedestrian walkways and newly paved road surfaces.
