Mayor Sandra Masters believes the new timeline for the plan to replace lead water pipes is an improvement from the original 25-year plan, but still sees room for revision.
Next Wednesday, Regina’s city council will review a plan to replace the rest of the city’s lead water pipes. The budget for the major project is set at $36 million with a timeline for completion of 15 years.
“There is some discussion among councillors about perhaps speeding up (the process),” Masters said during the Greg Morgan Morning Show on Thursday.
The 15-year plan is intended to address the health issues associated with contaminated water and stay within the existing budget. However, speeding up the project may have implications on taxpayers.
In terms of homeowners, Masters is unsure if the city will mandate replacing lead pipes on private property other than when renovations happen on existing homes.
“The city is going to replace everything leading into the streets for the connections,” Masters said. “As homeowners do renovations, they will put PVC pipes connecting into existing pipelines of the city.”
Regina racers now risk fine of $250
This week the operations and services committee voted to approve a $250 fine for stunting and racing on city streets.
According to the report from city administration, councillors Lori Bresciani and Andrew Stevens made the motion after complaints from residents about racing and loud vehicles were raised during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The goal of the fine is to reduce excessive noise and its impact on civilian concern.
Maple Leaf Pool nears completion
It is almost time to break out the swimming trunks and sunscreen as Maple Leaf Pool is set to reopen.
Construction on the pool began March 30, and should wrap up mid-summer.
According to the City of Regina’s website, the outdoor swimming facility will feature an ‘L’ shape design suited to all swimming levels and an accessibility entry for those with mobility challenges.
“It would be the ideal point to have it open,” said Masters. “It would be absolutely wonderful, especially considering COVID and being outdoors is what we are all trying to strive for.”
