For the past 17 years, Tom Lukiwski has represented areas around Moose Jaw and Regina on the federal stage.
But whenever the next election is called, Lukiwski won’t be running again.
The Member of Parliament for Moose Jaw-Lake Centre-Lanigan made the announcement he would not seek re-election via a media release and on social media Wednesday morning.
“Seventeen years is a long time. This has been the greatest chapter of my life, but every chapter must end,” the statement read.
Lukiwski, 69, simply said “it’s time” as to the reason why he’s leaving. He added it’s time to bring in new blood to keep the Conservative cause strong in the constituency.
He was first elected as a member of the Conservatives in 2004 by a slim margin of just 122 votes in the former riding of Regina-Lumsden-Lake Centre.
He won that seat three more times before federal riding boundaries were altered, creating the current riding of Moose Jaw-Lake Centre-Lanigan — a seat that he has won twice. He was last re-elected in 2019 by 24,000 votes.
He’s the only individual to have represented that riding since its formation.
Lukiwski said one of his proudest moments came after Bill C-18 was passed, eliminating the Canadian Wheat Board’s single desk marketing power.
