Drivers on some of Regina’s busiest roads will be facing delays as major construction projects get underway next week.
Work on the Winnipeg Street North overpass is to begin Monday, as is a project on Albert Street North between Ninth Avenue North and the north city limits.
On Sunday, sewer inspections along Albert Street between 20th Avenue and Hill Avenue also could cause traffic issues. Unlike the other two projects, the sewer inspections are expected to be done in just one day.
Winnipeg Street North
The two-year, $28.8-million project begins with the speed limit on Ring Road being reduced to 60 kilometres per hour in both directions between McDonald Street and Broad Street.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, northbound traffic on Ring Road will be restricted to one lane between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Southbound traffic will be down to one lane between those hours on Thursday, with the same restrictions applying to northbound vehicles again on June 8.
There also are to be short-term, overnight or weekend road closures during the course of the project.
Residents accessing the Mount Pleasant sports and dog parks and the bulk water station also will face detours over the next two months.
Albert Street North
The project is to start Monday at 6 a.m.
In the first phase — which is to last until June 14 — Albert will be down to one lane in each direction between the Highway 11 bridge and Ninth Avenue North in the northbound lanes.
The off ramps to Ring Road will be closed for drivers heading south. The city says drivers instead should use Pasqua Street North or access Ring Road eastbound via Ninth Avenue North.
In the second phase — which is scheduled to run from June 14 to June 21 — Albert will be down to one lane in each direction between Ninth Avenue North and the Highway 11 bridge heading south.
The off ramp to Ring Road westbound will be closed, so cars will be detoured to Pasqua Street North.
There also won’t be any access to highways 6 or 11 from westbound Ring Road. Traffic heading for Highway 11 will be detoured to Pasqua Street North, while drivers trying to get onto Highway 6 will have to detour along Armour Road.
Albert Street
Starting Sunday at 6:30 a.m., a private contractor is to inspect sewers on Albert between 20th and Hill.
Traffic heading south on Albert occasionally will be reduced to one lane in that area. Transit routes also may be affected, so the city suggested patrons should check with Regina Transit for bus stop and route changes.
