Two Regina residents so far have been swindled in a pizza delivery scam.
According to the Regina Police Service, both customers placed orders with local pizza places. On each occasion, the customer presented the person delivering the food with a credit or debit card to pay for the order.
“The delivery person seemed to have difficulties with the card and machine, but confirmed the transaction was successful,” the police said in a release. “Later, both customers checked their bank accounts and reported to police that significant funds had been taken.”
The Financial Crimes Unit has determined the fake delivery people aren’t associated with the restaurants involved or a legitimate food delivery service. According to police, the scammer has somehow got the delivery information from the business, collected the order and then posed as a delivery person.
Police are reminding people to ensure the delivery person provides some identification from the business in question, to be aware of how their credit or debit card is handled or used during a transaction, and to check their bank accounts periodically to look for unusual transactions or charges.
Business owners are urged to make sure people picking up orders provide proper identification and order confirmation, and to ensure employees are clearly identified when delivering orders.
Anyone who thinks they’ve been victimized by a scam should contact the Regina Police Service at 306-777-6500 or visit the police station’s front desk to report a financial loss.
