Construction has started on a new school in Regina.
A joint-use facility to replace Argyle School and Ecole St. Pius X elementary schools is being built at the current site of Argyle School in the Lakeview neighbourhood.
The provincial government put up $47 million for the building, which will house public and Catholic schools. Each school will be able to accommodate 400 students, with the ability to expand to 500 students each through the use of portables.
Argyle School will be two storeys in height, while St. Pius X will be three storeys tall.
“This unique design provides a distinct architectural personality for each school,” the government said in a media release.
The schools will have a common area and a corridor that will run between the two gyms.
The building also will feature a child-care centre with space for 51 children, a mini-gym and outdoor learning circles to promote outdoor instruction.
“Beginning construction is an important milestone for a project of this scale,” SaskBuilds and Procurement Minister Jim Reiter said in the release. “This state-of-the-art facility will have a positive impact on students in Regina for generations.”
Construction is expected to be done in the summer of 2023, with the school slated to open to students in the 2023-24 school year.
