D.C. United esports gamer Mohamed (KingCJ0) Alioune Diop defeated Agit (AgitPower) Katilmis of the Vancouver Whitecaps in a penalty shootout Sunday to win the EA Sports FIFA 21 Global Series North American Playoffs for PlayStation.
Both players had already qualified for the FIFAe World Cup. But Sunday’s victory netted Diop, a native of Arlington, Va., the North American crown and US$40,000. Katilmis, from Laval, Que., collected $20,000 as runner-up.
The World Cup is scheduled for Aug. 6-8 in London.
Diop forced an extra series after winning their first two-game showdown in overtime. He won the first game of the second series 2-0 only to see Katilmis score twice in the second game to force OT and then the deciding shootout.
Katilmis is one of three esports players for the Whitecaps, along with Alex (Exraa) Gonzalez and Erfan (Skill Shack) Hosseini. He is currently the top-ranked Canadian and fourth-ranked PlayStation player in North America.
