More families in Saskatchewan could soon be needing a helping hand as the last day of school nears.
School nutrition programs expire at the end of the month, which puts pressure on the province’s food banks to pick up the slack over the summer.
“Schools have nutrition programs whether that be snacks, lunches or weekend backpacks. Those things kind of go away over the summer months,” said Laurie O’Connor, the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre’s executive director.
“The food bank sees that need come to our door. We definitely see families struggling a bit more over summer as they have to meal plan for every meal.”
Until the end of the month, Viterra is supporting food banks by matching cash donations up to $100,000.
All money raised will be divided among the province’s 36 food banks.
