WINNIPEG — Andrew Jean-Baptiste scored in the 20th minute and Jonathan Sirois made eight saves as Valour FC blanked HFX Wanderers FC 2-0 on Wednesday in Canadian Premier League play.
Substitute William Akio added a second goal in the 89th minute for Winnipeg’s Valour FC (2-0-0), which was led by another strong performance from Sirois in goal.
Sirois earned his second clean sheet in two starts this season, both victories.
The Halifax-based Wanderers (0-2-0) outshot Valour 25-11 (8-6 on target) and controlled 57.5 per cent of possession.
Meanwhile, Ahinga Bienvenu Selemani scored twice — once in the ninth minute and again in the 43rd — to lead Calgary’s Cavalry FC (2-0-0) to a 4-1 victory over Atletico Ottawa (1-1-0)
All eight CPL teams are playing at IG Field for the first part of the season — a 29-day single-city stretch being dubbed “The Kickoff.”
