It’s back to work up north for those at the uranium mine.
Cameco has announced the 230 workers evacuated from the Cigar Lake uranium are able to return to the site. They were moved away from the mine due to the Briggs fire in the north.
According to a media release Sunday, the company is in the process of transporting employees back and will return to production later in the week.
The workers were evacuated on July 1 as a precaution due the wildfire burning in the area.
“In consultation with provincial wildfire management officials from the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency, we believe the risk to Cigar Lake posed by the fire has now subsided,” the release states.
The mining company explained operations can resume because of improved weather and smoke conditions, equipment remaining intact and the minimal likelihood of further road closures. They will do a final inspection of equipment over the next few days to prepare for a return to operations.
