It was a Cinderella run without the fairy-tale ending for the Montreal Canadiens.
The team came up short in its bid to win the Stanley Cup, losing 1-0 to the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 5 on Wednesday. Tampa Bay won the best-of-seven series in five games to claim its second straight NHL title.
Jim Taman, the president of the Western Canada Montreal Canadiens fan club, says it was a sombre mood in Montreal after the game.
“The city was pretty quiet last night,” Taman said on the Brent Loucks Show on Thursday.
“It hurts. You know we’re a little bit sad, but we’re smiling.”
They’re smiling because the Canadiens were not given a fighting chance against the Toronto Maple Leafs in Round 1 or the Winnipeg Jets in Round 2, yet defied the odds to reach the Stanley Cup final.
Taman and four members of his family travelled from Saskatoon to Montreal to attend Game 4 of the series at the Bell Centre, an experience Taman will never forget.
“The Montreal Canadiens provided us almost two months of a fantastic journey,” he said. “The highs far outweighed the lows. It was a remarkable ride.”
Montreal remains the last Canadian-based NHL team to win the Stanley Cup, having done so in 1993.
