Suspect charged in stolen vehicle call that left Saskatoon cop injured

A 23-year-old man has been charged in the wake of an incident that left a Saskatoon police officer injured Tuesday.

Police got a call reporting a stolen vehicle just before 4 p.m. March 21 on the 300 block of Avenue T North.

Officers working nearby spotted the vehicle and followed it to the intersection of 33rd Street and Idylwyld Drive, according to a police media release.

Police said the suspect abandoned the vehicle and ran away on foot. An officer went to chase him, but was hit by a westbound vehicle as he tried to run north across 33rd Street.

Police reported that the 37-year-old constable was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries. He was released from hospital later Tuesday night.

Footage of the officer being struck was later posted to a Facebook account under the name Mary Jane Mooswa.

Police tracked the suspect to an apartment complex on the 100 block of Avenue B North.

At that time, officers weren’t able to determine where exactly he was in the building. Police returned to the complex around 7 p.m. Tuesday and arrested the suspect after getting new information on his whereabouts.  

In an update issued Wednesday morning, police said the suspect has been charged with possession of stolen property with a value over $5,000.

He was due to make his first appearance in Saskatoon Provincial Court on Wednesday afternoon.
