Jamie Nye: Canadiens controversial draft choice is par for the course in pro sports

The Montreal Canadiens faced criticism for their first round draft pick, and deservedly so.
They selected Logan Mailloux, who is coming off a criminal charge in Sweden. He took a photo during sex and shared it with teammates and friends, and identified the woman, who did not consent to the photo even being taken.
A grotesque act and violation. These crimes can have lasting impact on the victim who now that the photo is out there has lost control over who sees the image.
Thankfully for Mailloux, he’s a great hockey player. The victim has never received a personal apology and Mailloux came out with a statement before the draft that he’s not mature enough to deserve to be drafted. I’ve been around long enough to know, his agents and advisors, were behind that clever statement to ensure some sign of remorse.
For Montreal, this was a hockey decision as much as they’re trying to sell as an opportunity to help Mailloux grow. No, they’re hoping this goes away and Mailloux becomes a solid top-4 d-man.
Once again, pro sports shows us as much as they preach character, skill and wins are always much more important.
