The Saskatchewan RCMP said Tuesday the deaths of two people at a campground in Meadow Lake on Monday were the result of a murder-suicide.
The RCMP said it received reports of gunshots at the Lions Park campground Monday just before 3 p.m. Officers who responded found a 34-year-old woman from the Flying Dust First Nation dead outside a camper and a 34-year-old man from the Thunderchild First Nation dead by apparent suicide inside the camper.
The RCMP said the initial investigation “has determined this is considered a homicide-suicide that is domestic in nature.”
A woman who knew the two people was taken to hospital for treatment of a minor injury. She was subsequently released.
The Mounties said they had received a request Monday at about 2:10 p.m., for a wellness check on the female victim from an individual who was concerned about her.
“Police officers were making inquiries related to this request when the separate complaints of the firearm discharged were reported,” the RCMP said.
The RCMP’s Major Crime Unit South, Saskatchewan Coroners Service, Meadow Lake RCMP and North Battleford Forensic Identification Services are continuing to investigate.
